Acrylic pouring - Everything you need and how to succeed

Create beautiful marbled effects and unique designs with acrylic pouring! Acrylic pouring, pouring technique or dirty pouring, is when you pour paint on an object, canvas or other surface. There are several different ways to do acrylic pouring. Below we walk you through everything you need to get started!

What do I need for acrylic pouring?

You need:

  • Something to paint on, for example a canvas.

  • Primer, preferably Schmincke Gesso. It can be mixed with water to make it more liquid.

  • Acrylic paint in at least two colors, but the effect will be best if you used 4-6 colors. Keep in mind that the colors you choose will mix to some extent, so choose colors that go together even if they mix. We also recommend that you always use white as a color. We recommend Schmincke Primacryl or Galeria Acrylic.

  • Pouring medium, preferably Schmincke Pouring Medium.

  • Plastic cups to fill with paint.

  • Protective gloves and toothpicks.

How do I do acrylic pouring?

  1. Prepare your canvas, preferably with primer. Let dry.

  2. Fill different cups with one color in each cup. The recipe for acrylic pouring is to mix:

    1 part acrylic paint
    1 part pouring medium
    ½ part water

Mix well until the consistency is runny but still thick, like custard or melted ice cream.

  3. Pour all the colors into the same mug, one at a time, without mixing the colors.

  4. Now it's time to pour! There are two different ways to do acrylic pouring. Either you just pour the paint over your canvas, or you place the plastic cup upside down on the canvas, without the paint having time to run out, and then lift the cup and let the paint flow out over your canvas. This technique is sometimes called Flip Cup.

  5. If bubbles form, you can pop them with a toothpick. If you want to manipulate the pattern that emerges, you can either gently lift up your canvas and wiggle it slightly in different directions so that the paint flows more, or gently drag the wide side of a spatula or palette knife over the paint.

  6. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours. If you want, you can now varnish your work, you can use Schmincke Pouring Medium as a varnish or Liquitex High Gloss Varnish. Let dry.

Now you are done! Acrylic pouring can be challenging and difficult at first. We recommend that you test first on a small area before making your canvas.
