Repaint your bike - Spray painting a bike

Thinking about repainting that old bike? Learn how to easily spray paint your rusty old bike. We will help you choose the right spray paint and varnish for your bike.

What spray paint can you repaint a bicycle with?

We recommend choosing paint from Montana Gold or Molotow Premium when repainting your bike. These colors are perfect for bike frames annd parts, high coverage and easy to use.

How do I spray varnish my bike?

For best durability, you must apply at least one coat of varnish after painting your bike. There are both matte and glossy varnishes for both Molotow and Montana Gold, but always use the same brand of varnish as the paint. If you want an extra durable varnish, choose a 2K clear coat. A two-component varnish (2K clear coat) makes your bike extra resistant to weather and wind. If you are repainting a moped, motorcycle or car, two-component paint is a must, as it protects against gasoline and other chemical liquids. There is also two-component paint (2K paint) which is perfect for cars, car bodies, mopeds and motorcycles.

Do you have to sand and prime the bike before painting?

Yes, before you spray paint, you need to sand down the old paint until it's matted down. Then you take the appropriate solvent and clean the bike. Then prime with metal primer or aluminium primer depending on the material to create a good attachment surface for the paint. If your bike is rusty, you can remove the rust with a steel brush and sanding paper before priming it.

How much paint do I need for a bike?

About one can of spray paint for two coats. As well as a can of spray varnish for two coats.

Tips for when you spray paint your bike

It's better to spray two thin layers of paint than too much at once, let dry for at least a few hours, preferably a day, before applying a varnish. If there is splashing/dripping, check that the cap/nozzle has not started to clog and that you are keeping the right distance. If possible, change the nozzle to a new and fresh one. Always make sure to shake the can in intervals during painting. If any splatters/drips form, allow them to dry and then lightly sand them away. Then apply another layer of paint until you are satisfied with the result. Allow the paint on the bike to harden for 24 hours before use.
