Concrete piano

A series of around fifty images of anti-tank barriers have been assembled by hand to create this document of the long, unbroken line of defense hidden in the foliage of Norra Djurgården's forested areas. It is a line of 48 solid cement blocks between two bays. These 17-ton blocks, called "concrete pianos" for their shape, were placed on the road where Russian tanks were likely to invade Sweden during World War II. Björn Larsson followed the barricade's three-kilometer track from one end to the other, photographing each concrete defender in its natural habitat. At the beginning of the project it felt like tracing a neat story, at the end the fear of invasion didn't feel so far in the past.
