Svensk Old School Graffiti

Sweden 84-92  •  Item ID: A-9788799975112

Svensk Old School Graffiti documents the first chapter of Swedish graffiti, 1984–1992. Some say it was a golden era. In the beginning, the paintings were happy, naive and charming – impossible to recreate today. Later on, they became brutal and technically advanced monsters.

The book is a 260 pages heavy piece showing material that has never been published before. Rare photos of pieces, writers and spots. More than twenty-five writers have looked back and shared their thoughts on graffiti, memories and reflections.

The book Old Swedish Graffiti is produced by Martin Lexelius, Fredrik Nilsson and John R Kjellström. The idea of making a book started in a forum on Facebook. The term “old school”, referred to in the book's title, reflects the time from when graffiti arrived in Sweden in 1984 and up until about 1992.

“These are unique and historical images documented from graffiti in Sweden. All of these paintings have been washed away a long time ago and the images deserve better than just lying in a thread on Facebook. It just requires a server crash or a mistake with some database, so everything is gone. A book is permanent. "

Martin Lexelius

Some of Swedish art history risks being lost. Photos have been collected from binder in people's cellars and attics. The book contains pictures of large, colorful and impressive paintings, but also pictures of the painters themselves, tags and environments.

"We come from old cultures and show visas on a bred and fair picture of the graffiti from the old school, all parts must be included."

Fredrik Nilsson

In addition, there are quotes and memories from the practitioners who were active at that time.

“This was before digital cameras, smart phones and Instagram. People have been saving their photos for 30 years, it is clear that this time was important for many. "

John R Kjellström
